This sculptural art work leads the list of the seven wonders of Bashkortostan. Salavat Yulaev is a national Bashkir hero, follower and brother-in-arms of Yemelyan Pugachev, a Cossack rebellion leader in the 18th century. The statue is the largest equestrian sculpture in Europe, and it weighs 40 tons, with only three support points! The monument to the hero stands in the center of the city. A scenic alley with dancing fountains was laid out in front of it.
The main museum of the republic stands in the heart of its capital—at the Sovetskaya square. This building was the seat of Peasants’ Land Bank before 1917. The National Museum was founded in the second half of the 19th century as “Provincial Museum”, and it is still one of the largest museums in the region. Its 55 branches hold over 440 thousand items. Its exposition has such divisions as wild life, natural history, archeology, local history and ethnography of Bashkortostan. The National Museum is especially proud about exhibiting the cavalry sword that was once owned by the Bashkir hero Salavat Yulaev.
The construction of this religious building in 1998 was aimed at harmonizing the relationship between Russian Orthodox and Muslim faith. The blooming tulip on which this project was based is a symbol of spring and it has been a symbol of the Turkic people from olden times. The two minarets, or prayer towers, from which the muezzins call all faithful believers to prayers are shaped as tulip buds. Lala Tulpan (meaning “tulip in bloom”) can hold up to 1000 worshippers.
When the Bashkir Opera Studio was created in 1932, the goal was to create local artists and composers in the republic. This theater is inseparably connected to the name of legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev: he made his first steps here that eventually brought him to a meteoric career of the world-famous ballet dancer.
Practically all those who live in Bashkortostan are ice hockey aficionados. Everyone, both you and old, like and respect players of the Salavat Yulaev Ice Hockey Club disregarding their victories or defeats. A new ice hockey palace for 8200 spectators was opened in 2007, much to the delight of ice hockey fans. The arena is perfectly outfitted, and architectural features of the building make it possible for every spectator to see the game very clearly from any seat of the arena stand.
